According to a survey by the Ernest & Young network, flexible working models are at the top of the list when it comes to work motivation. For female employees, flexibility is the second most motivating factor at 51%, and for men it's the third most important motivator (41%). So it's important for employees to be flexible. This is often a thorn in the side of bosses. Possibly because they think their employees only work productively in the office and that many things can only be discussed on site. We disagree.

Flexibility + flexible employees

Let's turn the tables for a moment: because flexible working hours also requires flexible employees. Sure, not everyone can work productively from the beach with a laptop on their legs or not be distracted by the conversations of other customers at the coffee shop. But for those who can, it's called: Why not? Because at the end of the day, what counts is whether and how well the work was done, doesn’t matter where you are sitting. We trust each other and know that everyone, no matter where in the world, does their job responsibly and reliably.

With a little help from my tools

We wouldn't be Startup Communication if we didn't use the latest tools from the coolest startups to simplify our hybrid office. We're a communications agency, so we do what we do best: communicate. Of course, this is harder with a hybrid team than when the whole crew is in the office, but we can manage it really well with help of the tools. A reliable chat program doesn't replace the office chat 100%, but at least GIFs replace one or two laughs. And of course, people talk about work, too. In addition, there is a software to manage tasks. The team goes through everyone's tasks together - so nothing is overlooked. What does this have to do with remote work? If colleagues work from different time zones, they will naturally have different working hours. That makes it more important to have a good overview of each other's tasks and regular updates. Our colleagues Laura and Juli have been very flexible on this issue:

Working in a camper: Remote from Sweden – Laura

Taking advantage of the summer and simply working from another country. Isn't that everyone’s dream? I made it come true and traveled through Sweden for a month with my boyfriend, my dog Lotti and our camper, and worked remotely during the trip. On the first day of the trip, we found a local cell phone provider and bought a data SIM that we plugged into our router. This gave us 24/7 internet access, which we could even use to hold parallel ZOOM and team meetings. I will never forget that time. Jumping into a cold lake in the morning when all the other campers were still asleep, taking a few laps and then working with a cup of tea and the most beautiful view. I'll be honest: That's the best way to work ;)

Escaping winter with Juli

I can say that remote work is 90% of my monthly work time. It is really amazing how remote work can help workers find great places to work despite being a good amount of kilometers away. But I am here to tell my experience about working more than 100km away. My experience with remote work extends up to 11.517km away. Amazing, isn’t it?
When in Germany the sun sets at 16:00 and people are baking cookies and drinking hot mulled wine, I am heading to my hometown, a small town in Buenos Aires state, Argentina. I have the chance to visit family and friends and at the same time keep working. The best part for me - is  summer in Argentina!
How do we manage this? First, as mentioned before, we have great tools that allow us to chat, have calls and see each other's tasks, so everyone is still up to date with what I am doing. Also at the end of my day, I leave updates, so when people start at 9.00 in Germany (04.00 am in Argentina) they will know what I have been doing. Yes, 5 hours of difference seems a lot, but starting early for me gives me the opportunity to still be connected in the morning and later, when everybody finishes work for the day I will usually concentrate on tasks that have no urgent deadlines. Finally, when I finish my work, I can still relax in the pool and have dinner with my family. Could it get any better? I don’t think so.
